RICHARD CANTON
Richard Canton, 5th Degree Black Belt (BJMA RED DRAGON SYSTEM), is the chief instructor within Canton Martial Arts and has been overseeing and teaching classes throughout Kent and East Sussex since 1997.
In 2002 Richard Canton set up Canton Martial Arts and since this time has expanded the club to reach and teach a wider student base.
In 1993 Richard started training with the Bob Jones Corporation in Australia, in both Zen Do Kai Karate, aswell at the Muay Thai syllabus they offered. He reached Brown Belt within both disciplines within the BJC.
In 1995, Richard turned professional and started teaching and training full time with Go Kan Ryu Karate. In 1997, he travelled with GKR to help set up and run the expansion in the London/Kent area.
Due to a change of direction and personnel, Richard decided with encouragment from his current student base through Kent, to start Canton Martial Arts in 2002. A hard decision at the time, but one now from which he has never looked back.
He still competes and trains on a regular basis, has won World, European, British and County championships along the way, (WUMA, NAS, MAASIF & Fight Night/Cage Shows), as well as continuing his training in other various martial arts like Japanese Kobudo – 2nd Dan, and Brazilian Jiu jitsu and MMA.
Richard has trained around the world with many high ranking instructors and fighters within many styles of Martial Arts (Karate, Muay Thai, BJJ, UFC, Kempo, Wrestling).
He was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall Of Fame (WUMA) in 2003 for karate instructor of the year at a prestigious event.
He currently resides in Eastbourne, UK, with his family, and if not in the dojo, can often be found on the golf course, the ‘ying’ to his ‘yang’.
