Hanshi Peter Rowe, 9th degree started training in Frankston in 1972 under Billy Manne and Dave Berry. From 1974-1977 whilst serving with 2 Commando Company he trained in Melbourne under these instructors at various clubs like Springvale, and from 1978 until 1980 he trained under Dean Watt in Bendigo. Then from 1980 onwards under The Chief – Bob Jones.

Hanshi Peter established his first club at Wodonga in 1978, then grew to Albury, the clubs have maintained a continuous presence to this day. Hanshi Peter was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2005 and has run clubs in Townsville, Brisbane, country Victoria, country NSW, Canberra and has several higher grade instructors still training with him including three 8th dans, 7th dan, 6th dans and many other higher ranks.

Peter has also been involved in other “fighting or protecting arts”, having worked as a Police Officer, Army Officer, Intelligence Officer and is a licensed firearms and defensive tactics instructor having gained experience form training throughout the world. Peter has been the BJMA corporation lawyer and has been a registered legal practitioner since 1993.

Three attributes I consider important within a martial artist:

  1. Persistence – keep on training no matter what..
  2. Mental flexibility – think defensive techniques with all your forms and drills
  3. Physical skills – work on developing your physical strength, endurance, skills and conditioning

What advice do you give someone starting out in BJMA:

Be willing to open your mind to a range of techniques and systems that we have in BJMA. However, learn to critically examine all techniques to work out what works for you and in particular what works in a combat stress environment.
